Flash fiction is a term you probably frequently seen online over the last couple of years, but the concept itself is not new. What is flash fiction? Well, there’s no one set definition but in general, Flash Fiction is considered to be a short-short story with a typical story length of about 300-1,000 words. “One of the first known usages of the term “flash fiction” in reference to the literary style was the 1992 anthology Flash Fiction: Seventy-Two Very Short Stories. Editor James Thomas stated that the editors’ definition of a “flash fiction” was a story that would fit on two facing pages of a typical digest-sized literary magazine.” Source: Wiki
Many authors write Flash Fictions and publish it on their blog as a way to attract new readers. Writers can also participate in Flash Fiction contests, magazines solely dedicated to Flash Fiction and even work with a group of authors to publish an anthology featuring Flash Fiction.
Flash Fiction is a great way for new writers to gain a larger audience quickly and easily. Even Chipotle has gotten into the game by asking several well known authors including Malcolm Gladwell, Toni Morrison, and George Saunders to write a short piece of work which they placed on the back of their to-go bags and cups.
